Küresel ölçekte kitlesel göçlerin ve sığınma hareketlerinin yaşandığı günümüzde Türkiye çok sayıda mülteciye ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Eskişehir de Suriye’ye sınır olan illere ve büyük şehirlere göre daha az Suriyeliye ev sahipliği yapmakla birlikte uydu kentlerden biri olduğu için ev sahipliği yaptığı şartlı mülteci sayısı her geçen gün artmaktadır. Mültecilerin ve Suriyelilerin şehrin toplumsal yaşamında daha çok yer almaya başlaması, ev sahibi toplum ile mülteciler ve Suriyeliler arasındaki etkileşimi gündeme taşımıştır. Ev sahibi toplumun mülteciler ve Suriyelilerle ilgili algılarının biçimlenmesinde medyanın önemli bir yeri vardır. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmanın amacı Suriyelilerin ve şartlı mültecilerin Eskişehir yerel basınında nasıl temsil edildiklerini irdelemektir. Çalışmada 2000-2016 dönemdeki haberlerin analizi yapılmıştır. Bulgulara göre Eskişehir’deki yerel gazetelerin konuyu ele alış biçimleri ve yoğunlukları farklılık göstermektedir. Eskişehir’de artan Suriyeli sayısına paralel olarak haber sayısında da artış söz konusudur. Gazetelerin Suriyelilere ilişkin haberlerde daha olumsuz bir bakışa sahip oldukları, şartlı mülteciler ve özellikle Suriyelilerle ilgili haberlerin makro düzeydeki siyasi tartışmaları güçlü bir biçimde yansıttığı görülmüştür.

ABSTRACT

“REFUGEES” AND “SYRIANS” IN ESKISEHIR LOCAL PRESS

At a time of global mass migration and refugee mobilization around the world today, Turkey hosts millions of them. Though it is low compared to the number of refugees hosted by other provinces and metropolis cities bordering Syria, the number of conditional Syrian refugees hosted by Eskisehir, a central province of Turkey, has continually increased in recent years. Syrian refugees becoming more and more visible in Eskisehir’s social life put the spotlight on the relationship between the host society and Syrian refugees. Media and press outlets play a significant role in the formation of any host society’s perceptions concerning refugees. In this context, this study delves into the way Syrian and other refugees are represented in the local press. In the study, news in the local press between 2000 and 2016 were analized. According to the findings, the coverage and the frequency of refugee topic differ among various local newspapers but some common patterns are observed. An overwhelming majority of local papers hold negative views of Syrian refugees, with their coverage of refugees and particularly Syrian ones strongly reflecting macro-level political debates.
